On examining my dwelling, I found that one of the windows of the cottage had formerly occupied a part of it, but the panes had been filled up with wood. In one of these was a small and almost imperceptible chink through which the eye could just penetrate. Through this crevice a small room was visible, whitewashed and clean but very bare of furniture.

「覗き見」をするモンスター。もちろんこれは『失楽園』のサタンが楽園を覗く場面と重ねられており、モンスターが「見ること」すなわち人間の観察によって知を獲得していく点が気にかかる。この怪物は言語の天才でもあったが、彼の場合、言葉は先にありきではなく、見ることが先にある。
